BKS Iyengar (1918-2015)

ABOUT IYENGAR YOGA

We are passionate about Iyengar Yoga– a form of classical yoga developed by Yogacharya BKS Iyengar (1918-2015), one of the world’s foremost exponents of this ancient art, science and philosophy. Through his own practice over many years, careful study of the earliest available texts, and his teaching to hundreds of thousands of students worldwide, he reached back to the roots of yoga and revitalised this ancient knowledge. He brought yoga to the West, demystifying it and demonstrating that yoga is open to all regardless of age, creed or infirmity.

Iyengar Yoga is different from other styles of yoga

  •  Iyengar Yoga emphasises precision and alignmentin the postures
  •  Iyengar Yoga is methodical and systematic in the introduction of new poses (asanas) and in the sequencing the poses within a class.
  •  Iyengar Yoga classes include a range of poses--dynamic and strengthening, passive and restorative ones, as well as breathing techniques and relaxation.
  • The use of props (blocks, belts, etc.) aids stiff, injured, or older students to adopt postures, which otherwise would be difficult or impossible.
  • Poses are sometimes held for longer periods to increase stamina and improve awareness.
  • Teachers not only demonstrate the poses, but also correct students verbally and at times physically.
  • Individual physical problems and injuries are catered for within the class.

These differences provide added benefits. Iyengar Yoga

  • increases flexibility, agility and coordination.
  • tones, firms and strengthens muscles.
  • improves posture.
  • increases stamina and endurance.
  • relieves back, neck, and other health problems.
  • balances the functioning of organs and glands.
  • enhances performance in sport and other physical activities.
  • improves concentration, focus and mental clarity.
  • reduces stress and teaches relaxation;
